Go to Items.
Press View Categories in the upper right corner.
Press Category Attributes in the upper right corner.
Press + New Category Attribute in the upper right corner.
In the field under ATTRIBUTE CODE(E.G., DRIVERS_LICENSE), enter the code (i.e. department, location).
In the field under ATTRIBUTE NAME, enter the name you want to appear in the category edit window.
From the drop-down menu under CUSTOM ATTRIBUTE TYPE, select what type of data will be associated with that category attribute. If it is a set of letters or a combination of letters and numbers, select String. If it is a set of numbers, select Number.
From the drop-down menu under FRONTEND INPUT TYPE, choose whether the field is going to be a Text field, Text Area, Select, Date, Date and Time, or File.
If you choose Select, an additional field will appear where you can press + Add New to add the selection options that will appear under the Category Attribute in the category settings.
In the field under UI COLUMN SIZE IN POS, enter a value from 1-12. This value represents how wide the field is going to be and should be based on how many characters the average response will require.
Press Save Changes.

Creating category attributes will allow you to assign details like department or location and generate reports based on the data from those attributes.
